The Arcane Library - 15th June
« Thread started on: Jun 18th, 2007, 11:00am »

Dragonfly entered the library after Archer, stopping in the threshold to lean on the doorway, arms folded.

"The Crimson Archer that I once knew wouldn't just crack under pressure" she said softly, almost in a whisper. "There is still hope, Jay"

Jay heard Sabrina's voice behind him. She hadn't spoken to him in months, not really spoken. Not since Talos Island, and after that... things had gotten complicated.

"Ya think ah'm crackin' up, Sabrina?" He said, without turning around, scanning the books on the shelves in front of him. There was an intensity to his voice, and something hard; unfamiliar. He slowly turned to face her, his face looked almost like a mask, barely moving.

""There is still hope", he said, mimicing her tone. "There ain't no hope; not fer Saffron an' not fer me. These things don't end, Sabrina, they just go on an' they hit ya harder everytime they come back around."

He turned back towards the books, opening the ring bound notebook in his hands, scanning the pages. "Ah offered ta help yer once, Sabrina, do ya remember? Ah held ya an' stroked yer hair while you sobbed in my arms like a frightened girl." Jay's voice was quiet, almost gentle. "Do ya remember?"

"An' do ya remember what ya did after that, Dragonfly?" He said, his voice a cold whisper.

Tyger decides to wait outside the room, his hearing still picking up everything but maintaining the illusion of privacy.

"Look, whatever has happened in the past happened. I was once a threat to the group, but... well, I blame the swords; powerful magic has a way of consuming you. But listen, that is neither here or there. This is about Amber. We will find her, you understand?"

Jay turned around, slowly closing the notebook in his hands. He looked at Sabrina, his blue eyes were cold and hollow, none of their usual sparkle showing at all.

He took a few measured steps towards the young woman, the simple motion seeming unusually threatening.

"Ah have no doubt we'll find Saffron, an' ah have no doubt we'll bring back her b...", he faulters slightly, not wanting to finish that sentence.

After a pause, he says, "we'll bring her back. But ah ain' kidding myself that she's likely sittin' somewhere jus' waitin' fer us, Sabrina. Ah ain't that naive."

"These folks have killed hundreds, jus' to murder one woman. Ya think that Saffron is so impoartant that they'd treat her any different?" He turned his back on her, and spoke quietly as he walked back towards the bookcases.

"One thing ah've learned bein' in The Militia, while fightin' my own team mates, an' watching trust die; the World don't owe us nothin', ain't none of us gets any special favours."

Sabrina collected herself as Jay walked towards her, he looked threatening but what frightened her more were his words.

"So thats it? You're just going to bury your head in meaningless books and wallow in self pity while the ones you aught to be protecting are out there?! You're not some tailor at icons or a street cleaner Jay, you are by fate, the Crimson Archer. People expect things of you. People look up to you. For gods sake, you're supposed to help lead the Militia not turn your back on it." Sabrina paused for a moment to recompose herself, her voice had been rising in volume and intensity. She gave it a moment for Archer to consider what she was saying.

"To be honest with you Jay, if it weren't for you... I'd... I'd be so lost. In fact I think I was... for a very long time. But all the while, I kept thinking of you. The passion you have for this job, the way you always keep on fighting even when the odds are against you. I came back because of you. I found a new sense of purpose. Please, don't deny me a rolemodel... don't deny the Militia a strong leader and do not deny Amber a great friend. She's not yet dead Jay and its about time you believe it too... Are you listening to me?"

Jay didn't turn round to face Sabrina. For moments it didn't even seem like he had heard her.

"Do you know anything about the Fey, Sabrina?", he asked, as if picking up from a different conversation.

Sabrina looked aghast. She'd just poured her heart out to this man only to be ignored. "The fey?!" she screamed, struggling to contain herself. "The fey!? Jay! Did you hear anything I just said to you?"

"Every word," he said, turning to look at her. Jay held up the open note book, showing Saffron's hand writing inside.

"Did ya know Saffron was half-fey? Ah didn't. Ah don't know a d**n thing about her; or you; or any one of them folks out there." He jabbed a finger towards the meeting room. His voice trembled with a self directed anger.

"Ah'm failin' all of them, Sabrina! Ah don't know any o'them, an' ah ain't book learned like Mer'de, like Dante or e'en the Commander!" He sliced his hand through the air in a cutting motion. "Ah'm nothin' but a gay redneck playin' at bein' a hero! Ya think ah'm hidin' in here?! Ah'm lookin' fer a way to find her, dammit but ah don't know how!"

He sweeps his hand around him, taking in the whole librray. "All these books; all these words, this knowledge an' ah don't know where to start!"

His stance was tense, like a coiled spring or a cat waiting for its moment to pounce. He was completely at odds with the peace of the library; desperately out of place.

"Ah don't know what ta do, Sabrina," Jay said, his voice suddenly quiet, holding a note of pleading. "Ah feel like ah'm holdin' an arrow on the bowstring, an' the draw's bin made, but ah ain't got no target. Ah need a target, Sabrina. Ah gotta loose soon, or ah feel like the bow's gonna break."

"I've worked under a few commanders in my time, Jay." Tyger commented loudly, walking in from the doorway. "Few have earned my respect." He prodded Jay once in the chest. "You're one of them. You haven't learned from a book? Where did you learn from? The streets? If so, good. Coz we're ON those streets you know so well, Jay, not in a book. You've learnt leadership by doing it for yourself, not reading what others have to say on the matter. The best leaders delegate. So delegate, Jay. You're the only one we all trust, for good or ill."

“I fought a man once,” came a deep voice from the doorway.

Stepping into the library, Dante seemed casual, almost at ease for a change. He had his hands folded behind his back but was as rigid as ever. From behind him, there appeared to come the sounds of the meeting disbanding.

“He was about five feet two inches tall and was widely believed to be the product of an incestuous relationship. He could not read, or write and was often found unconscious by his men having spent the night in deep intoxication and relentless acts of brutality. I always thought that in taking control of Asia and most of Eastern Europe, Ghenghis Khan did rather well for an illiterate, inbred barbarian.”

He stopped, fixing Crimson with a stern gaze. “I have served under more commanders than you have had hot dinners and I mean that without its usual flippant sense. I do not suffer fools and will not tolerate wilful ignorance. If I did not believe that you were worth taking orders from, I would not be working underneath your command. You may belittle yourself Mr Reynolds, but for all our more academic skills, you may well be the only one of us who has come up with the necessary information to track our missing Banshee.”

He tapped a manicured nail on the journal where it had been put down.

“The mantle of command is never comfortable,” he continued, “but it can often reveal things that even its bearer did not know existed.”

Jay was quiet. He looked from face to face, his anger spent. Ah'm so tired, he thought to himself, and closed his eyes, pinching at the bridge of his nose as a wave of exhaustion broke upon him.

"Ah hear ya; all of ya..." he spoke quietly, took a deep breath and opened his eyes. "Ah can't face them out there, not after this; not right now. Let the others leave, then ah need someone to get Mer'de an' ask him to come in here."

Jay turned away and walked over to the cluster of seats that created a boundary between the books and the rest of the room. He almost collapsed onto the large wooden bench. He turned to look wearily at the others, his eyes red ringed.

"Ah got an idea to talk over, but first ah need to sort some Fey facts from fairytales. Dante, ah guess that one's fer you."

He looked away and stared at the ceiling, feeling for all the world like he was falling.

(The above entry has been edited to remove a VERY clumsily written end paragraph which added nothing to story. Sorry for any confusion caused!)

(He's trying to hide that fact that Archer just sniffed some coke and got his blue-eyed sparkles... he's a druggie! GET'IM!!)

Mer'de entered the Library, paperworks in hand. "Must you refer to me by slang terminology young man?" Mer'de asked softly. "Given my rank of command, I should take offense... but I do prefer Rocks to Juniper's 'Furball'"

"Well, of course I gotta." Tyger commented, before departing.
